We have heard about the Johnson Family Reunion for over 40 years now and this year we were invited to go and meet some of the people that we have heard about all these years.  Paw, (Melanie's father) actually invited us last year but we couldn't go because the kids came up for July 4th. We were so lucky that he invited us again.  We went down to Cecil on Friday morning to spend the night with Gene and George so we'd be there Saturday morning to attend the reunion.  We hadn't been down there since last November so it was fun to see what all Gene had done to " our house".
The reunion was held at a big church in Prattville where it was cool from the outside heat of over 100 degrees.  There were 105 members of the Johnson family there.  If everyone came from the Johnson family, I don't think the room would have held everyone.  I can't imagine being part of such a big family.  I remember being so impressed with Gene and George's wedding presents she was unpacking when they lived next door to us in Jacksonville.  She told me that she had, had a "family shower" and she had over 100 cousins, so that was a LOT of presents, right there.  Presents that I couldn't imagine getting.  Silver, crystal, china.  I wanted my house full of such things.  Oh, yeah, back to the reunion.  The oldest person in the family was Wylie ( Paw) Johnson.  He's 93. There were 13 children in Wylie's family.  The second oldest at the reunion was Gene Burt Johnson who is 86 ( Gene's Mom). She was married to  Mac, one of Wylie's brothers.   We actually knew several of the family that we have met over the years.  I think the table of food that everyone brought, was a mile long.  It looked like it anyways.  There was everything that you could imagine from salads, deviled eggs, Bar B Q, ribs, fried chicken, fruit and desserts that would make your blood sugar go up by just looking at them.  We certainly didn't go home hungry.  Chuck and I started home around 2:00 pm and the traffic was terrible!!  We decided it was from the July 4th traffic with people heading out for an early Holiday week.  As we got closer to North Alabama, the traffic was much better.   The temperature in the Explorer said 110 degrees!  I know! and the AC in the explorer doesn't work to well right now. ( it's being fixed believe me!)  We really had a great weekend.  Thank you Paw for inviting us to be part of your family.  You are truly our Alabama family.  Thank you Gene and George for making our weekend fun.  ...but that always goes when we are with y'all.
